Hold your breath for some seconds…
Take a deep breath out and there you are, flying at speeds of 100km/hour. Suspended in the air flow, it feels as if you were hold by millions of invisible threads. You are flying above the birds, surrounded by some clouds that fade away when you reach them. There is a helicopter following you, you can feel it… but you know that it will not hurt you. It seems that you are overflying some snowed mountains… Wait, are you in the Marron Bells or in Geography class?
This is a possible scene that a lot of students will experience during the upcoming years in their classrooms. The truth is that virtual reality came here to stay and to revolutionize our educational system. Let’s discover a little bit more about it…
What is virtual reality and how it works?
Virtual reality is a background of scenes created by a computer (or computerized systems) that seen through the glasses, it makes you feel part of the scenes, as if you were inside. The lens amplify the angle of vision, which is complemented by a 3D image that amplifies even more the feeling of realism.
According to the type of virtual reality, you interact with the “artificial reality” through a monitor (as in the videogames) or using extern complements like helmets, glasses, positioners, HDM…, that is why you get the feeling of disappearing of the real world.
How to implement virtual reality to education and what are their benefits?
At the beginnings of the educational system, teachers learned to teach a class only using a blackboard and a chalk. Nowadays, students already got used to work with photography-filled textbooks, projectors, films, tablets and computers. It seemed inevitable that lessons keep their evolution to a major interactivity. Nothing better than virtual reality to represent and recreate the lessons with all the benefits that we tell you below.
In the first place, you live an immersive experience. Once you put on the glasses, you find yourself completely immersed in a surrounding where the visual, and the hearing senses take sides. You go from being the spectator to being the actor of the situation. You live your own experience, what will make it more easy to assimilate and remember.
In addition, virtual reality does not have any physical distances, the entire world is your example, and you can teletransport yourself to a river mouth, or in front of an important monument within seconds. To do it by yourself, it would cost you hours and many days.
Additionally, you can see all variables at once. For example, imagine that you are designing a 3D prototype, by only putting your virtual reality glasses on, you will have it on your hands and will be able to easily appreciate all its angles.
And… what if you are a chemistry student? The time that you can practice at the laboratory is tied to a number of weekly hours, and the equipment, is expensive. By using virtual reality glasses, the learning resources are unlimited, each student can teletransport himself to a virtual laboratory where he can practice as much as he can, and taking no risk.
The truth is that using virtual reality brings a lot of benefits and most of them are yet to be discovered in the upcoming years. Perhaps there will not be classrooms anymore, and the teachers will become guides of experiences, teaching a personalized class according to the level of every student.
